Some believe that when it comes to donated items, beggars shouldn’t be choosy. I would respectfully disagree. I’m sure the person or business that donated the item did so with good intentions. But if it doesn’t sell at the auction it doesn’t advance the cause of the charity.

I recommend avoiding items that have a stated retail value because bidders tend to stop at that preset number or the item sells for below fair market value. Those items include, but are not limited to, unusual artwork, professional services and certain types of jewelry. So, unless you know that you have several ready bidders prior to your auction event – I wouldn’t expect a major windfall.
